Significance of the Transcontinental RailroadThe transcontinental railroad helped encourage the American expansion because more people moved westward for many reasons and this journey was a difficult journey filled with mountains, plains, rivers, and deserts. The people migrating west either had to take this route with these dangers or take the 6 month journey by sea. Many people wanted a railroad that extended from the West to the East to make traveling easy. Once the Transcontinental Railroad was built many more people migrated because this was an easier way.
