Difficulties on the Great Plains
There were many different difficulties that occurred when living on the Great Plains. One of the difficulties that settlers on the Great Plains faced was the weather because on the plains there were hot and dry summers, long and cold winters, and many droughts. Since there were hot and dry summers droughts happened often along with many grassfires, and since there were long and cold winters there were many blizzards and in the spring flooding would happen. Another challenge that the settlers faced was the grasshoppers that came by millions and ate all of the settlers crops like in the 1870's. Lastly a challenge that the settlers on the Great Plains faced was the occasional raids by the outlaws and Native Americans.

The Great Plains also create a challenge of farming because the plains are dry, flat, and were held together by grass roots or sod. The farmers on the Great Plains had been called the 'Sodbusters' because they had to break through the sod in order to plant there crops. Since the settlers also needed to build there homes on the Great Plains and since there was not a lot of wood on the plains the settlers used sod to build there homes.
